Great Day for RNA at FSD
2008.06.15 (MTRA)
RNA took the first three races at FSD on June 8.  Officially, RNA has only one Maiden horse left, Empire Sky, who finished second in the Two-Year-Old Maiden, which was won by LECTERN, breaking his Maiden for RNA.  In the Two-Year-Old Allowance, Wanamaker regained his authority with, what seemed a workout, winning wire-to-wire at 6f.  RNA's SAFE WITH ME took second.  SUNDAY AT WAR (JPN), RNA's own son of WAR EMBLEM broke his Maiden in his second start in the Three-Year-Old Maiden race facing four other opponents.  MISS VOODOO and CAT POINT finished second and third in the Three-Year-Old Allowance behind Starhold's BRIDESMAID.  DOUBLE DANCE, who broke his Maiden last time out finished a dull third in the Four-Year-Olds and Up Allowance.  Song Of Steele, making her tenth stakes attempt finished third in the Brooklyn Handicap (gr. II, 12f) boosting her earnings to $202,500, the first RNA horse to break $200K.  Next, She's So Fly, making her eleventh stakes attempt came in third in the Gallant Bloom S (gr. II, 6f), making her the second RNA horse to earn over $200K, but she is now the leading money earner at the farm with $209,000.

RNZ Purchases Two Fillies, Cherokee Affair to Shuttle?
2008.06.15 (MTRA)
Plans to open a second farm in New Zealand leaves lots of room in the stables for more horses.  So far, only two of those stalls were occupied, until now.  RNZ has offered to purchase two fillies by Bold Lancer from Starhold Farm (TX), literally doubling the size of the RNZ holdings.
In other news, RNA has been giving thought to shuttling the pre-freshman sire, Cherokee Affair.  "He is just not proven yet, and there's no point in shuttling a stallion that we think may not have the potential to take on the real stallions in the Australia area, but, we also think, the quicker we get him down there, the quicker he has a crop if he turns out to be a great sire.  We just don't see it happening, yet."

Regency Announces Plans for New Zealand Operation
2008.06.12 (MTRA)
With the idea of overseas racing being brought up, Regency Thoroughbreds has announced plans for a southern hemisphere operation in New Zealand (Regency New Zealand, or RNZ) about 30 miles southeast of Auckland on the northern island.  After the farm was purchased, Regency picked up two Australian-breds, Royal Palace (AUS) and Academic Achievement (AUS), both by ROYAL ACADEMY (USA) out of the KENDOR (FR) mare, TWITTER (AUS), winner of the SAJC HC Nitschke Stakes.  Academic Achievement (AUS) is planned to start as a two year old as soon as her RMR is approved.  Otherwise, in July, she will start as a three year old.  Royal Palace (AUS) is planned to begin racing in July as a two year old.  They are both full siblings to SERIOUS SPEED (AUS), winner of the 2007 MRC Guineas (AUS-G1, 8fT) and 2008 Hobartville S (AUS-G2, 1400m).

Ice Cat Euthanized
2008.06.10 (MTRA)
Ice Cat Winning Her Debut     ICE CAT, half sister to Regency Thoroughbreds' first Stakes Winner, BOREAN, was euthanized this evening due to re-injuring her right front sesamoid, which she fractured in an Allowance race at Independence Race Park on May 20.
"She was doing just fine with her fracture, it was healing nicely, when she became rambunctious in her stall, not only re-fracturing it, but breaking it completely this time, just shattering it."
ICE CAT was being treated and recovering at the Schering-Plough Large Animal Clinic since May 30.  The on call veterinarian at the time made the decision to euthanize the filly after contacting Regency personnel shortly after the incident.
"The sad thing is, she was really beginning to make a name for herself.  She was a wonderful filly, we won't forget this experience."

She's So Fly Favored in the Gallant Bloom H (gr. II)
2008.06.10 (MTRA)
She's So Fly     For the first time in her life, She's So Fly is the favorite.  She will take on a total field of seven for the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap at 6 furlongs for fillies and mares four years old and upward on June 11.
"It was actually a real surprise when we saw the entry list for FSD this afternoon.  We have so many favorites going into the day of racing including Lectern in a 2yo Maiden, Wanamaker in the 2yo Allowance, Sunday At War (JPN) in the 3yo Maiden, Miss Voodoo in the 3yo Allowance, Double Dance is third choice in the 4yo+ Allowance and Song Of Steele is second choice in the Brooklyn Handicap.  We don't have the favorite in the 3yo Maiden because we're almost fresh out of Maidens!  We only have 3 left at Regency.  That's a feat!"
She's So Fly finished 8th of 9 in her last start, the ungraded Signe Sanden Memorial when she stumbled at the start and fell.
"She's never really been one for the turf, and she proved it right there.  She's going back to dirt for good this time."

Storm Danzig Sixth in Belmont S. (gr. I)
2008.06.09 (MTRA)
STORM DANZIG, Allowance Winner, placed sixth in the Belmont S. (gr. I) on Sunday.
"He really started rolling in the stretch, so he may need a marathon around 2 miles.  He was only bred to go a mile, though.  It's bizarre how these horses work sometimes."

Borean is Human, After All
2008.06.06 (MTRA)
BOREAN, Stakes Winner, Finished Second in the FRR Juvenile Stakes     BOREAN had it, he had the win to become a MSW, the first for Regency.  He had it.  And in an instant, he lost it.  Nosed out by Decor Stud's THE ALLEGORY, who's first win came at Omaha West, in the FRR Juvenile Stakes for $100,000.
"This is where his pedigree is beginning to really scare us.  He's going to be facing so many royally bred Two Year Olds in the near future, and he might not be able to stand up to it.  This loss really hurts his points.  He is definitely the most experienced Two Year Old out there, and that really helps him out in the points race.  Hopefully with his dam now being the dam of a Stakes Winner (BOREAN), this will help his points out.  We're getting nervous with him.  We'll have to wait and see."
The loss was devastating, but who he won over was a jolt of excitement.  A whopping 13 Two Year Olds went to the post, only 5 of them first time starters.  THE ALLEGORY was already a Stakes Winner, Restricted, FF JENOVA finished 5th, Magico, out of BRAVE DEED, finished 7th.  AZERI's son, Anduril, was a first time starter but finished a respectable 4th.  The win boosted BOREAN's earnings to over $100,000, Regency's richest racer.
"Anduril is who we're really going to get worried about.  Look at that pedigree!  Awesome Again over Azeri...  Hello!"
BOREAN's next start will be in the IRP Juvenile Mile Stakes on June 20th.

Regency Makes Surprise Entry in the Belmont
2008.06.06 (MTRA)
The decision was made to ship STORM DANZIG from FRR to New York after an impressive win in an Allowance Race.
"He's never raced as a Two Year Old, he only has 2 wins under his belt, but he's a fabulous Three Year Old.  Just because he didn't get a chance to start at Two and has to make up for lost time now doesn't mean he's not a good race horse.  He may not win the Belmont, but he'll surely give everybody else a run for their money!"
STORM DANZIG has started 5 times as a Three Year Old, finishing first twice and second twice, off the board in only one start earning $82,500.

First Hauler Arrives at Omaha West
2008.05.25 (MTRA)
Decor Stud's truck arrived today carrying three Stakes horses.  TAKEMETOHOLLYWOOD, SAMURAI DANCER and URBAN SPIRIT (IRE) exited the trailer and were walked to the Stakes Barn on Sunday.
"We're really excited that the Stakes Barn is finally going to get some use.  The Inaugural First National and West Dodge Road Stakes should be exciting, by a non-graded stakes standard, anyway."

Triumph and Tragedy at Independence Race Park
2008.05.24 (MTRA)
Ice Cat Winning Her Debut     ICE CAT, half-sister to BOREAN, fractured a her right front sesamoid Tuesday.
"She's recovering well, she's stable, but she'll never race again.  The doctors are giving her a 60% chance of recovery at this time," stated a Regency spokesperson.  Breeding plans have not yet been made, pending the recovery of the Three-Year-Old Filly.  ICE CAT stumbled just yards from the finish line and was eased finishing 8th in an 11 horse field.
On the brighter side, SAFE WITH ME and DOUBLE DANCE both captured their first victories.  Wanamaker has officially taken a back seat to BOREAN, when he finished third in a 6f Turf Allowance.  Song Of Steele showed in the IRP Turf Challenge and She's So Fly finished 8th of 9 in the Signe Sanden Memorial.
We will keep you updated on ICE CAT's condition as news becomes available.

The End of an Era
2008.05.14 (MTRA)
Storm Cat     Premier Sire of Sires, STORM CAT, is pensioned.  After covering 44 mares and impregnating only 3, the decision was made to withdraw him from the stud barn just yesterday.  Regency's Preakness starter, STORM DANZIG, is by STORM CAT, as well as ICE CAT, half sister to BOREAN.  The 25-year-old's mother, TERLINGUA, was euthanized just weeks ago due to infirmities of old age.
"This is my favorite living thoroughbred, and it's hard to realize that his time is coming, and the pensioning only confirms my thoughts that the loss of one of the greats is imminent.  It is satisfying that he won't meet the same fate of my favorite thoroughbred of all time, ALYDAR."
STORM CAT will live out the rest of his life at Overbrook Farm, with the same respect and authority as his dam, TERLINGUA, did, until her last day.

Three Winners At FSD, She's So Fly Second
2008.05.13 (MTRA)
Storm Danzig     Friendship Downs produced three winners fro Regency.  POLAR won on the turf at 6 furlongs, with SEE ME GONE taking the second race at 6f in the mud, followed by Sherriff Slew for second.  Lectern and Huntoon came in 2nd and 3rd in the third race at 8f on the turf.  STORM DANZIG posted his first win in the fourth race over 7f turf.  After that, She's So Fly lost to A.P. CINDY by 2 lengths in the Humana Distaff (G1), posting her second G1 placing.  Song Of Steele was the last Regency horse to start finishing fourth in the Woodford Reserve (G1).  This leaves Regency with now only 3 horses who have previously started and are still Maidens.

Wanamaker Falters in the Mud
2008.05.13 (MTRA)
Wanamaker couldn't live up to his reputation at SAD when he ran third in the Versace F on May 3rd.
"He didn't run up and grab the lead like his normal self.  He's really never been tested, except in his first race and his second run to BOREAN.  But, then again, he's never had mud in his face before, either!"
The big brown colt came back to the barn a little edgy after this start, but calmed down after a hot bath.
The best finish of the day came from Empire Sky who came from well off the pace to nab the second spot in a Maiden race.  Safe With Me, daughter of Eclipse Champion, SAFELY KEPT, finished fourth in her second start, an Allowance race.  And Double Dance, the newest purchase of Regency, finished third (and last) in an Allowance for Three Year Olds and Upward on the Turf.
No plans for Wanamaker have yet been made.

Ever Heard of Cherokee Affair?
2008.04.30 (MTRA)
If not, have you ever heard of COUNTESS DIANA, North East Dancer or LITTLE BOLD BELLE?  These are just a very few of the mares that have 2007 foals by Cherokee Affair.
Cherokee Affair is the unraced foundation sire of Regency Thoroughbreds and what makes him so great is his blue blood pedigree.  He is a full brother to Champion Two Year Old and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Winner, WAR PASS.  So far, Cherokee Affair is the sire of 15 yearlings, probably one of the largest crops in the MTRA.  He is an unproven sire that is looking to prove himself with such horses as the filly, Cherokee Countess, who is out of Champion Two Year Old Filly and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Winner, COUNTESS DIANA.
Intrigued?  Stop by the Stallions page and take a look at Cherokee Affair's yearlings.  Interested in one?  Make an offer!  Some available at no cost, some for trade.  Millennium Arrow, Cherokee Countess and Icy Affair are not any of the available yearlings.  Cherokee Affair also has an unlimited book, and the last day to get your 2007 foal is on December 31, 2009, so don't miss out!  He stands to all mares, Champion or Unraced.

Just How Good Is Borean?
2008.04.30 (MTRA)
As we march into May, more blue-blooded Two Year Olds are on their way to the track.  BOREAN won the TIBBP Futurity in April from an unproven dam who never raced and who's only other foal is a Three Year Old Maiden Winner, ICE CAT, who just finished second in an Allowance at FRR.  So, the question is, how good is BOREAN?  In his first Stakes attempt, the IRP Futurity, BOREAN broke fast, ran around the turn even faster, and then faded to last.  This was an immediate eye opener, changing his racing style to stalker instead of frontrunner.  This proved a successful tactic when making his third start in an Allowance against only two other horses.  While his stablemate, Lectern, battled it out with My Magic Delite the entire way, BOREAN stayed poised and ready for his move at the top of the stretch and didn't disappoint.  As Lectern faded, BOREAN ran his way past My Magic Delite to take the win by a length.  He was truly multi-dimensional.
BOREAN made his second stakes attempt three weeks later at IRP in the TIBBP Futurity.  Back at IRP nerves were on end as everyone wondered if history would repeat itself at the same track.  This time, he was fresh.  In his first three starts, he had only 11 days rest in between each race, this time he was ready.  His stablemate, Wanamaker, and a Maiden Winner, The Taniste, were the only two who would face him.  This time, he couldn't be controlled, he went straight to the front.  He wasn't going to wait for Wanamaker to tire The Taniste down, he was going all out.  The three stayed with each other the whole way with BOREAN in front in the end by a length, again, Wanamaker finishing a head in front of The Taniste.  He had accomplished what was feared wouldn't be.
Now, he will revisit FRR, the site of his Allowance win in March, and try to defeat other Two Year Olds in the FRR Juvenile Stakes for $100,000.  This will be his first attempt at turf, and it could turn out negative.
"We just want to keep him sharp.  The only other Two Year Old Stakes that he can enter is in the Versace F at SAD, but our horses have had such bad luck there (a half-sister to CH COUNTESS DIANA finishing last), we don't even want to try it.  The worst that can happen is he'll be a Stakes Winner, the best, a Multiple Stakes Winner.  Either way, you'll see him in the Breeders' Cup in November."

Dam of Storm Cat, Terlingua, Dead at 32
2008.04.29
Terlingua     The dam of one of the greatest sires in recent history, Terlingua, was euthanized at Overbrook Farm due to infirmities of old age.
From Secretariat's second crop, Terlingua was the sole reason for D. Wayne Lukas' switchover from Quarter Horses to Thoroughbreds.  Lukas trained Terlingua to 7 wins in 17 starts including the Hollywood Lassie S (gr. II).  She earned $423,896 in her three year campaign, retiring as a four year old due to breaking down.
She is the dam of Storm Cat, who's stud fee in 2006 of $500,000, was the most expensive in the world until being dropped to $300,000 recently.  Pioneering, another son of Terlingua, stands alongside Storm Cat at Overbrook Farm.
She will be buried at Overbrook Farm.

Storm Surge Wins First Time Out, As Does Regency
2008.04.28 (HRP)
Storm Surge (rail) defeats Cape Tribulation by a neck in hers and Regency's HRP debut on April 28     STORM SURGE (bl.f.2 (Feb) (WV)) won her, and Regency's, first time out on Monday evening against a field of 10.
"We're in complete awe, never did we think we would win our first time out in the HRP.com series.  This girl only worked once since being created, and she blew the rest of the field away!"
Breaking sharper than any other horse in the field, STORM SURGE took the lead and never looked back in a 2f Maiden Special Weight for fillies in Race 2 of the day.  Her first and only work at MNR was on a good track at 2f in :25.3.  She was on the outside looking in until another horse scratched.  She ran the 2f on a fast track in :22.4, an outstanding improvement.  MNR has no Allowance races for 2yos at no cost, so Regency will be making a deposit on Friday to put her in a money earning race in the near future.
Regency's other filly, Lectern, will make her first start on May 2 in Race 14 at MNR going 2f.  Lectern has worked twice at MNR, :26.3 over a good track, and this morning at :24.4 on a fast track.

Borean, Wanamaker Black-Typed
2008.04.20 (MTRA)
Stakes Winner, BOREAN     The boys are back and they're going out of April in style.  Wanamaker was sent to the IRP TIBBP Futurity with his stablemate today, stalking him relentlessly, but it wasn't enough.  BOREAN came out the winner, pulling away by a length over Wanamaker and The Taniste to take the $75,000 race, earning BOREAN a top spot as a two year old.
"We just always expected Wanamaker to be the horse the first time he set foot on the racetrack.  He's a half brother to MGSW GEORGIE BOY, so we thought it was obvious he was the one to watch.  We were wrong."  BOREAN is out of the unraced sister to PAVORATTI, half to SNOW RIDGE.
She's So Fly, MG1SpW, lost by a head in the TIBBP Handicap, a restricted stakes for Non-Winners of 2, to BLACK CAT.
The newly purchased Double Dance finished fourth in his maiden start.
Lectern finished second in his fourth start, an obvious improvement since adding blinkers for the first time, and FTS Empire Sky finished fourth to him.

The British Are Coming!
2008.04.19 (MTRA)
Belle de Jour (GB) Being Lead to the Paddock     Well, maybe just one.  The 2008 ITR Coolmore Lexington Stakes (gr. II) was the stage of some pretty colorful competitors. The early favorite was SpW, Gone To War, the only colt and most experienced of the field.  Carrying the high weight of 120 pounds, Gone To War made an impact on the crowd on the morning line.  The unheard of, Belle de Jour (GB), took the crowd by awe when she stepped into the paddock, drawing a crowd.  The first time starter was both ridiculed and praised for making the CLS start today.  She was the latest entry in a field of six on Saturday.  The Maiden Placed, Glorious Gold (SCOT), was made third choice.
When the gate opened, Gypsy Knight fell at the start, nearly unseating her rider.  What happened next, was almost unreal.  Belle de Jour (GB) made a quick jump from the outside post to take the lead right along with Gone To War into the first turn, neck and neck down the backstretch.  Glorious Gold (SCOT) ran mid-pack alongside Angelic Moment, with KY Beyond Winter running to the outside of them, Gypsy Knight was out of it by this time, trailing by a large margin.  As the field began to turn, Belle de Jour (GB) made a dramatic move, leaving Gone To War as if he were standing still.  By the top of the stretch, the margin had increased to 5 lengths, Gone To War leaving the rest of the field by 2.  At the wire, it was Belle de Jour (GB) by 9 lengths.  Glorious Gold (SCOT) got past Gone To War in the final yards, leaving KY Beyond Winter, Angelic Moment and Gypsy Knight completing the order of finish.
"This is the most spectacular race that has ever been run at Omaha West," noted Steward, Natalie Kilpatrick.  "We'll probably never see anything like this happen ever again."  The first time starter is by Montjeu (IRE) ® and out of Happyanunoit (NZ) ®, both champion racehorses.

Regency Picks Up Double Dance
2008.04.13 (MTRA)
Regency is in the process of purchasing Mp Double Dance from Starhold Farm, TX.  "This colt has a more than excellent pedigree, there's no reason why he shouldn't be racing."  He hasn't started in over a year and a half and will be making his debut at IRP next week.

Song Of Steele and She's So Fly Pair Up In Maker's Mark
2008.04.13 (MTRA)
Song Of Steele and She's So Fly paired up in the Maker's Mark Mile (gr. I, 8fT) coming in 2 and 3 to both become G1SpW's.  Song Of Steele's earning were more than doubled to $135,000 with her second place finish, losing by only a head.  She and winner, ALLEGED RISK, defeated She's So Fly by 1 3/4 lengths, holding off Elusive Silver and Senor Banner by less than a neck.
"Song Of Steele really showed her stuff, proving that she can run with the boys, nearly running down ALLEGED RISK in a Grade 1.  I'm in fear that she's actually going to turn out a better turf horse than a dirt horse, so we're going straight to IRP and entering both Song Of Steele and She's So Fly in the TIBBP Handicap for 3yo+ who are non-winners of 2 on dirt."
Storm Danzig also ran at FSD finishing second in a Maiden race on a good track, losing by a nose to Sea Cat.  They dueled the entire way around the track, just missing the win.  He will stay in Lexington and will start on May 11 in a Maiden.

Borean Regains Himself
2008.04.07 (MTRA)
BOREAN, twice a winner     BOREAN, who suffered a devastating loss in the IRP Futurity in March, regained himself after only an eleven day layoff.
"We've been running this horse to death, and he performs awesome.  He won his first start, eleven days later something went wrong in the IRP Futurity, then we start him again eleven days later, and he blossoms.  We figured out what happened in the IRP when he burnt himself out early, had him stalk the pace this time, and it turned out fantastic!"
BOREAN will be given a rest this time and will start in the Diamond Juvenile Cup for $100,000, possibly with WANAMAKER at his side.  WANAMAKER will be able to cover the 5f with no problems, but it may not be enough distance for BOREAN, who has won at 6f and 7f.
As other news goes, Sherriff Slew finished 3rd in her Maiden Race at 5f on the turf.  Lectern finished 3rd behind BOREAN in the Allowance.  CAT POINT, who was the favorite in Race 2B, a Three Year Old Allowance, finished fourth and last after falling to her knees at the start.  She came back lame and will rest up for a few months.  Song Of Steele, making her second start this year, finished fourth in the New Orleans Handicap (gr. II, 9f) earning herself $20,000, as She's So Fly stopped mid-race after being in contention early.  Although nothing was found physically wrong with She's So Fly, she will undergo a thorough veterinary check before returning to the track.  ICE CAT ran out of steam in the Fair Ground Oaks (gr. II, 8.5f) against better competition.  She will start again within a month in a more reasonable race.  Finally, Storm Danzig, who showed real potential in his first race, finishing 2nd in an Allowance, finished 5th in the Lanes End S (gr. II, 9f) earning a decent $14,250.

OMA - Day Set For Racing
2008.04.06 (MTRA)
The horses are here, the stage is set.  61 horses will start tonight under the lights for the second season of Omaha West Racing.  Post time is at 7:05 PM and is expected to be mostly cloudy with a temperature of 54° with a 17mph wind from the NW.  The day is beautiful right now with temperatures in the upper 50's.  Race 9 has been split and will feature only non-winners of 2 in a lifetime.  Race 10 has been created for winners of 2 or more in a lifetime.
Watercolors heading to the track for her morning work     After the announcement was made, a flood of additional horses came in, lead by the favorite, WATERCOLORS, a multiple Allowance winner.  What's Your Sign is the morning line second choice in Race 10.  Other horses attracted to the race are SNOW DEVIL, Lady Moonsong, Wish Away, What's Your Sign, Ain't Misbehavin', THREE O'GLACK, GO NORTH YOUNG MAN and I'M A TRIBUTE.
There's a new two year old sensation on the tracks, and his name is CHEROKEE BRAVE, a half brother to SEA SECRET and WE BE JAMMIN.  All though he turned in a slow time of 0:57.45 for the 5fT at Rocky Island on a muddy track, he has been training on the dirt track at OMA at lightning speeds.  He is co-favorite with the South African first time starter, Scaramouche (SAF), who is a half sister to ELEMENT OF POWER, a G3SW.  Both horses will face off in the 6f two year old Allowance in Race 7 against another first time starter, Onceonthisisland, out of the G2SW, ONCEINABLUEMOON.
The track will be listed as fast, as the rain came in overnight and the temperatures have dried out the track.  No more rain is expected today.

OMA - 34 Additional Horses Swarm OMA
2008.04.04 (MTRA)
Victory Farm (KY) and North Star Stud (CA) vans pulled in this evening just as the rain was letting up.  The 23 horses from Victory Farm lined up in Barn 2 for the night, while North Star horses filled up their privately owned Barn 4.  Among the arrivals were SpW's What's Your Sign and Wish Away, who were stalled next to each other.  What's Your Sign is the early favorite for the 9th race.  CERULEAN, the huge Three Year Old Colt stood out among all others as he made his way to his stall while putting up quite a fight with his groom and the track employees.  Wish Away, the amazing Ten Year Old "Fart" as his owner has humorously nicknamed him, will be starting his tenth race.
The sudden surge of horses may call for a split of Race 9, a 9f Allowance for 4yo+.  Currently, there are 2 fillies and 7 colts; if split, it would be by gender.  More entries are still expected from Starhold Farm (TX).

OMA - More Vans Arrive, South Africans Okay'd
2008.04.02 (MTRA)
Décor Stud's van pulled up this evening with two horses aboard.  As the temperature and the sun dropped, two year old The Allegory and eight year old THREE O'GLACK stepped off of the van and into barn number 1.  At the same time, Golden Emblem (SAF) and Scaramouche (SAF) were being walked to barn 1 as well, clearing quarantine.  The latest forecast for Sunday night calls for rain in the morning with highs in the 50's and lows in the 30's.

Georgie Boy Out
2008.04.01
WANAMAKER's half brother, GEORGIE BOY, is out of the Kentucky Derby with a pulled back muscle.  He will most likely rest until the Pacific Classic in August, according to trainer, Kathy Walsh.  He underwent X-Rays and it was determined that he will not require surgery for the injury.

OMA - First Vans Arrive at Omaha West
2008.03.30 (MTRA)
The four year old filly, Hydropower, stepped off of the van onto Omaha West's property this morning at 3:30AM.  Arriving from Sandra Bickel's Sentinel Farms (Des Moines, IA), she was brought into her stall in the empty barn and is settling nicely.  Approximately 12 hours later, the exotic Golden Emblem (SAF) and Scaramouche (SAF) walked off of Natalia Banasiak's trailer and into barn number 10, the quarantine area.  "They're fresh off the trailer from South Africa and we want them to wind down comfortably.
"We're hoping for a turnout of at least 5 horses per race, to be split after 13 entrants, since our gate only has 12 holes.  The first time we ran a meet back in August of '05, some horses weren't too thrilled with running at night, and didn't do too well at our track, but ended up becoming champions later on."
Post time for the first race is scheduled for 7:05PM, with races in 20 minute increments, leading up to the ninth race at 9:45PM.  April is a big time in Omaha, when the temperatures start going up, sports starting taking hold (the Omaha Royals start their season on April 3rd), the city starts buzzing from people recuperating from cabin fever.  There may be some rain in the forecast for Sunday night, as well.

Curlin Conquers the World
2008.03.29
Photo: 2008 Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1) winner Curlin will return to the United States on April 16 and remain with trainer Steve Asmussen until plans are finalized for his next start.     CURLIN, half-brother to Regency's Cataton and Sherriff's Cat, romped in the $6M Dubai World Cup (UAE-1) Saturday night covering the 2000 meter (9.94f) in 2:00.15 at the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse.  With about 200 meters to go, CURLIN just looked like a freight train, drawing off against the rest of the world's best competition under a near hand ride.

His niece, CAT POINT, recently won her second start at FSD going 6f in 1:11.28.  His two year old nephew, Lectern, is placed, while his two year old niece, Sherriff Slew, is unplaced.

CURLIN is now the in third place behind CIGAR ($9,999,815) and SKIP AWAY ($9,616,360) for all time leading money earner with $8,807,800 and is expected to become the first Thoroughbred to break the $10,000,000-mark.  He will take the rest of the spring off and will start back in America sometime this summer.

Wanamaker Sets New Track Record in Walkover
2008.03.25 (MTRA)
Wanamaker setting a NTR for 5f in :56.0     WANAMAKER won his second start on March 22, in awkward fashion.  Not only did he win by default, he set a New Track Record at 5 furlongs in :56.0, just 2 seconds off the current world record.
"I'm disappointed that WANAMAKER didn't win over other horses, but I'm astounded at the pace he set!  He went from star, to taking a back seat to BOREAN, to super-star in less than a month!  I'm more confused than anything.  In his first start, he fell back to dead last, in a humiliating defeat, now this?  Why couldn't he have been like this from the beginning?
WANAMAKER's original name was supposed to be Daytona, and it would have suited him, too.  Like a stock car, he put the pedal to the metal and didn't let up, and the jockey never even touched him with the whip, no need to!"  Instead, he was named after a major street in Topeka, Kansas where the owner and her family visit annually to attend the O'Reilly Summer Nationals drag racing event.  "I guess we just couldn't go wrong with his name!"
Voodoo Priestess Winning in Her Debut     Another walkover by CAT POINT also took place at Smokin Aces Downs on March 22 as she took an Allowance all on her own, boosting her earnings from $1,000 to $26,000.
VOODOO PRIESTESS, Regency's only winner of the day who actually defeated other horses won over two others in a maiden for a brilliant debut on turf.  The half-sister to DARK TRUTH and D'Ariella proved that she can hang just like her siblings.
The only Regency to be defeated was SpW She's So Fly who finished third (and last) in an Allowance for 4 Year Olds and Older.  It wasn't a disappointing loss, as she only missed the win by a head.

Song Of Steele, Ice Cat, Storm Danzig to Graded Stakes
2008.03.25 (MTRA)
Song Of Steele, ICE CAT and Storm Danzig will all start in G2 company at Falcon Ridge on March 31.
"I saw the entries for the Derby Preps at Rocky Island Parkway for the Louisiana Derby and Gotham, and both had two entrants each.  Storm Danzig may only be Allowance placed, but he's got enormous pedigree potential to run, and, well, he just might have a shot at becoming G2Sp by default when he runs in the Lanes End (G2) on March 31.  ICE CAT is going to make her start in the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) at the same track, an Oaks prep.  Also, Song Of Steele is going to make a 9 furlong attempt in the New Orleans H (G2) since she has drastically improved in the starting gate, losing her first race back since her 7 month layoff only due to slippage on the turf."

Adelaide's First Stakes Winner, Borean Last
2008.03.22 (MTRA)
DARK TRUTH boosted his earnings from $85,954 to $250,954 on Thursday with a win in the ITR Texas Mile (gr. III, 8f). He overcame Track Champion, Seattle Cat, as well as three others, to win in a slow 1:40.08. "We couldn't be happier than if he were our own horse! We now have our first Stakes Winning Producer, Adelaide, who we just acquired from Starhold (TX) on March 6th. His full-sister, Black Annie, was born at Starhold and shipped to Regency with her mother. Can't wait to see what she'll do now!" stated Regency owner, Natalie Kilpatrick. "This is a positive end to a most upsetting day for us with our own horses."
BOREAN, the two year old star, and only experienced two year old in the field, finished last in a field of 6 in the IRP Futurity (6f). Storm Danzig was the best Regency racehorse of the day, finishing 2nd in an Allowance at 8f, beating ICE CAT who finished last. BOREAN will be shipped back to Nebraska to be looked over by the vet. "He was out on the lead just fine where he was supposed to be and then just stopped. It wasn't like him at all. He was the most experienced and had one of the better pedigrees out there, it's just a mystery."

She's So FlyShe's So Fly Acquired by Regency
2008.03.19 (MTRA)
Regency was quick to snatch up MSpW and Track Record Establisher She's So Fly from Starhold Farms (TX) after a posting for her was made on the MTRA group sales page.
"She's one of those horses you've 'heard of' in the MTRA, mainly from P.A.'s (Gerschler, North Star Stud, CA) web site. She's So Fly was bred by P.A., and listed on her dam's get along with so many other stakes winners, such as IS HE SEXY (AQHA/CH/MSW), RAZZLE DAZZLE EM (G3SW), and HE'S SURE SOMETHIN' (SW). It's just sad that this highly athletic mare has been subject to loss after loss, not having won a race since her debut 2 years ago."
She's So Fly will most likely be pointed for an allowance race this spring after she has a thorough checking out by her vet. The four-year-old daughter of FLY SO FREE ® is (6) 1-1-2 $77,000 winning her Maiden Debut at 2, finishing second in the Buellton Futurity at 2, and then third in her only two starts in 2007, the Stellar Stakes and Red Carpet Champions Cup. She's So Fly is the second SpW acquired, joining Song Of Steele in the training barn.
"She's bred to go 8f-12f, but for some reason she loves those sprints around 7.5f, so we're sending her to Smokin' Aces for the 6 Furlong Allowance there on Saturday. She will run on the dirt, she's not made for the grass."

Borean to IRP Futurity
2008.03.18 (MTRA)
Regency's newest Two Year Old hopeful, BOREAN, will start in the IRP Futurity. His half-sister, ICE CAT, will start in an allowance earlier that day. The only thing concerning about running him in the RIP Futurity is that it's a furlong less than his debut win, he's made for a higher distance, but we'll find out just how many dimensions he has by running a shorter race.

Icefest Produces Two Winners at FSD
2008.03.18 (MTRA)
Ice Cat Winning Her Debut     Icefest produced Regency's two winners at Friendship Downs on March 9 with ICE CAT (05f, Storm Cat ®) and BOREAN (06c, Stormy Atlantic ®), each winning their respective maiden races.
Borean     BOREAN covered 7 furlongs in 1:23.57 defeating other first time starters, including two stablemates, Lectern and Wanamaker. "Wanamaker was the horse we were aiming for a Two Year Old Championship, being that he is a half-brother to GEORGIE BOY, I guess we just simply overlooked BOREAN. He has now become our target."
ICE CAT, a Three Year Old Filly by Storm Cat ®, destroyed a field of eight horses including stablemate Cat Point who finished fifth. "I never thought I'd have any luck with either of these Three Year Olds, since we have Storm Danzig on his way out to IRP in two days. We may end up with those two matching up here in the summer."
Since BOREAN is now the star Two Year Old, plans are still up in the air. "We could take him to IRP in two days and hope that he's had enough rest and put him in the IRP Futurity, or we can take him to FRR in two weeks and put him in an allowance. Surely we have to make this decision quickly."

Georgie Boy Wins San Felipe, War Pass Falters
2008.03.16
Georgie Boy
GSW GEORGIE BOY won the San Felipe (gr. II, 8.5f) in his first try around two turns. GEORGIE BOY is a half brother to Regency's Wanamaker, a two year old making his debut at FSD on March 9 (results are still pending). GEORGIE BOY has never been worse than second in a stakes, third in his lifetime, winning, also, the San Vicente (gr. II, 7f), Del Mar Futurity (gr. I, 7f), and placing second in the Best Pal S (gr. II, 6.5f). He had a late burst of speed in the stretch to overtake his rivals by 3/4 of a length, proving that adding an extra furlong or two will rocket him to a huge victory.
This is good news at Regency, following the disappointing news that Cherokee Affair's full brother, WAR PASS finished 7th and last in the $300,000 Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III, 8.5f) after being squeezed at the start. "Cherokee Affair's value as a stud has definitely dropped from this loss, but there's still races to be run. Street Sense broke the (Breeders' Cup) Juvenile curse last year by winning the Derby, and he wasn't perfect. Hopefully WAR PASS can do the same."

Song Of Steele and Humorous Reality's Siblings Up For MEAs 2007
2008.03.12 (MTRA)
Six Year Old Song Of Steele and Yearling Humorous Reality's siblings are up for MEA honors for 2007. CARO'S GLORY, half brother to Song Of Steele, (05c, Cozzene ®) is up for Champion Two Year Old Male, GLORIFIED (03f, Sunny's Halo ®) is up for Champion Older Female; while Humorous Reality's half brother, Regal Quality (05c, Elusive Quality) is up for Champion Two Year Old Male and Senor Banner (03g, Grand Slam ®) is looking for Champion Older Male Honors.
"While we definitely have our older male and female votes picked out, we're still deciding on Champion Two Year Old Male, since Song Of Steele has already raced for many years, her chances of improving aren't as good as if Humorous Reality was to enter the racing world next year fresh with a MEA Champion as her half sibling, that would definitely bring her value way up." Odds are, CARO'S GLORY is going to take 2YOM honors this year, since he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), whereas Regal Quality is a SpW, only by default (3rd in a 3 horse field in the Halloween Special S (gr. III)).

Regency Purchases Song Of Steele
2008.03.09 (MTRA)
Song Of Steele
Stakes Placed Winner, Song Of Steele, has arrived at Regency. The dark grey filly by D'AVENANT out of MSW/MSW-Producer STEELE GLORY stepped off of the van at about 8AM this morning. She is bred by the MTRA powerhouse Starhold Farm (TX). Song of Steele hasn't raced since July '07, and plans for her future have not been finalized.
"This is an excellent chance for Regency to get its first SW, and we would be much happier with that status as a broodmare, but we'll have to work her a few times to see if she still has it."
Song Of Steele has had a win at 6f, so the farm is looking for a sprint to start her in. "The ITR Humana Distaff Handicap (gr. I) (FSD, May 11) is going to be her best distance for a stakes race, but G1 competition will be working against her. If she works good, we will probably put her in an allowance at 7f before starting her in the Stakes. If she handles that race well, she'll probably go to the Humana, if not, we don't know.
After some further review, we have now discovered that Song Of Steele is half-sister to GLORIFIED, the 2006 MEA Champion 3-Year-Old Filly who missed HOTY honors by 1 vote, and CARO'S GLORY, winner of the Grade II San Vicente Stakes (7f). "When Thérèse Wolmer, previous owner of Song Of Steele, posted her listing, I simply thought I was putting in my bid for a SpW, I had no idea until after she arrived that she's actually half sister to an MEA Champion!" With that, the decision to continue racing Song Of Steele has been made, where she will start her next race at Smokin Aces Downs on March 22 in Race 8, a 6 furlong sprint for fillies and mares 4-Years-Old and Up. "She's Stakes Winning material, she has black type all over her pedigree, she's just not a miler like her previous owner thought she was, she's a sprinter, and she's going to take the sprinting world by storm this year!"

Regency Purchases Adelaide
2008.03.06 (MTRA)

Regency Thoroughbreds recently purchase TrCH/SpW Producer, Adelaide, from Daralyn Wallace. Adelaide is the dam of D'Ariella, the 2007 Champion 4yo Female at RCP who was second to JEDI in the RCP Red Carpet Champions Cup, as well as Dark Truth, a 2004 Allegation colt who was 3rd in the FRR Super Sprint. She was delivered to the farm with a full sister to Dark Truth, Black Annie. Regency is still looking to purchase a few more broodmares who are anti-A.P. Indy/Storm Cat lineage because of the depth of the current sires in the roster already.
